Violinist and Educator

Hello!
I am Sofia Castalia, creator of Castalia Strings.
One of my biggest sources of inspiration is a quote from my favorite teacher, a brilliant violinist I had the pleasure of studying with back in high school. The quote is from Edward Elgar and says, "There is music in the air, music all around us! All we have to do is take as much as we require."
The idea that music is there - just waiting for us to connect with it - was such a beautiful concept to me. It taught me what love, joy, and acceptance feel like during a time in my life when I so desperately needed someone to believe in me.
While he has since passed on, I strive to honor his legacy with every note I play and every lesson I teach.
My Teaching Journey:
Since 2006, I’ve had the joy of teaching violin, viola, piano, keyboard, and cello to all ages and skill levels. In 2012, I expanded my work to include teaching and mentoring in universities, high schools, and youth theaters. In 2019, I began teaching in preschool through middle school classrooms, where I also taught choir and theater. I have also led group classes, masterclasses, technique workshops, and summer camps for musicians ranging from beginners to advanced players.
I have a creative, collaborative teaching style that focuses on technique and practice strategies while also exploring music theory, music history, acoustics, and performance skills. I am passionate about nurturing each student’s unique learning journey. Whether we’re working on bow hold or performance confidence, I meet students where they are and adapt to their individual styles and goals. My mission is to help students grow into confident, well-rounded musicians, empowered by their progress and fueled by their curiosity.
My Performance Journey:
I hold a degree in Violin Performance and Business Management and am a current member of ASTA (American String Teachers’ Association) and the SAA (Suzuki Association of the Americas).
Over the past 20 years, I have built an extensive performance career. My credits include orchestras, musicals, operas, ballets, chamber ensembles, recording projects, and solo performances. I perform regularly for weddings, receptions, fundraisers, and private events of all kinds. I frequently work with choirs and have had the privilege of working with many different groups, including Cirque du Soleil. My performance career has been far from "normal," but I am so grateful for the way it has shaped me into the musician I am today.
